A karakara usually holds one to two go (1 go = 0.18 liters) of awamori. Karakara come in various types and shapes, including unglazed ones and those made of Ryukyuan glass. They are liquor containers now very familiar to many people. Okinawan karakara are believed to have been the source for the karakara found in Kagoshima Prefecture and also the gara of Kumamoto Prefecture. Okinawa, however, has no tradition of drinking warmed sake, so the Okinawan karakara differ from those in Kagoshima and Kumamoto Prefectures in not being suitable for heating.
