Fennel-which is called uicho or uichobah in Okinawa-is an umbelliferous herb of European origin. It includes various substances, including anethole and pinene.

Its leaves are often used in Italian and French cuisine to remove the smell of fish and shellfish. It is regarded as effective in preventing loss of appetite and heartburn, and as a cough remedy to remove phlegm. Some people also brew its seeds to take at as a medicine for beriberi or to deal with urinary problems.
